The time for Grendel to be slain was the night he decided to terrorize the mead-hall under Beowulf's watch. His first mistake was killing a man that was asleep on one of the benches. To attack someone in their sleep is a disgrace, and which of course, would anger any honorable man. As Grendel raised his claw to slain a supposedly sleeping Beowulf, the captain of evil discovered himself in a handgirp harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth. Every bone in his body quailed and recoiled, but he could not escape. Grendel was now at the mercy of the very man that has sworn to slay him. Grendel was getting weaker by the second and regretted to choose this night as one of the nights he would stalk the mead-hall. Surprisingly, the mead-hall withstand through all the rough damaging it was going through as the onslaught continued to rage on. Then he who had harrowed the hearts of men with pain and affliction in former times and had given offence also to God found that his bodily powers failed him. On the brink of death, Grendel made one last attempt to make it back to his den before he was to take his final breath. And that is how Grendel came to an end.
